Community Welfare

Community Welfare Unit, What Do We Do?

The Unit provides a comprehensive advisory service in respect of local taxation, housing and council tax benefits and concessionary travel.  The Unit works to alleviate poverty and, as part of the Councils Anti Poverty Strategy, actively encourage applications from those who are entitled to receive benefit.

Our staff are committed to delivering a flexible, high quality service.  Advice and information is available at the Town Hall or by telephone, through home visits for the elderly and disabled, through the Council’s dedicated benefit website and a dedicated outreach team.

The Community Welfare Team is responsible for actively encouraging both young people and the over 50’s to be involved in local issues that particularly affect them. The team is also responsible for the processing of grant applications from voluntary organisations and community groups and administration of the concessionary bus permit scheme for the over 60s and people with disabilities.  The team leads many initiatives, including the "Connecting the Community" initiative which aims to give every Borough resident access to the internet.  Staff also represent the Borough on many strategic partnerships at district and county level.
