The Place opened in January 2003, following conversion from a disused young people’s club into an intimate but fully-equipped 130-seat theatre auditorium, with associated technical facilities and rehearsal rooms. Currently home to three drama groups and one musical / light opera group, The Place presents a varied season of shows throughout the year, both from its home companies and from occasional visiting theatre companies.

The Mill Theatre is home to five regular companies which stage up to eight productions a year in this converted watermill. Originally the mill had five floors but volunteers including a national job creation scheme gutted the insides and took out the top four floors to create an auditorium space with a storage basement.

A moderately steep rake allowed for 192 seats onto the stage which over the years has seen a mezzanine level added plus lighting box, lights perches with dressing rooms directly off backstage. Front of house there’s a bar and rehearsal room plus offices, kitchen and toilets. The building is also used for parties and weddings.
