The Implications of Designation

Designating a Conservation Area does not try to preserve a place in aspic – it is about managing change so that positive qualities are protected and opportunities for improvement identified. The main implications of designation are as follows:
  • The Council is required to pay special attention to the desirability of preserving or enhancing the character and appearance of the area when exercising its powers under the Planning Acts/Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act.
  • There is increased control over the demolition of unlisted buildings and structures.
  • Owners of trees must give the Council six week’s notice of their intention to lop or fell them.
  • Planning applications must be advertised by the Council on site and in at least one local newspaper to give people the opportunity to comment.
  • Permitted development rights such as the size of house extensions are more restricted. · Specific statutory duties are placed on telecommunications operators.
Controls over listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments are not altered.
