The following list is by no means exhaustive but provides a good initial guide to those seeking Best Value information on the Internet.

Government Agencies 

The Audit Commission - "The Audit Commission aims to be a driving force in the improvement of public services by promoting proper stewardship of public finances and by helping local authorities and the NHS to deliver economic, efficient and effective public services." 

Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) - "An area of the Department of Transport and Local Regions website dedicated to local and regional government issues and best value." 

Home Office - "The Home Office is the Government department responsible for internal affairs in England and Wales. The principal aim of the Home Office is to build a safe, just and tolerant society in which the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families and communities are properly balanced and the protection and security of the public are maintained." 

Other Bodies 

CIPFA - "CIPFA is the leading authority on accountancy and financial management for the public services." 

Inter-Authorities Group - "Founded in 1992, the Inter Authorities Group is an independent, non-political, non profit making association of over 100 UK local authorities and other public bodies dedicated to sharing best practice and the benchmarking of public services." 

Improvement and Development Agency - "The Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) was founded in April 1999, by local government, to work with it and for it and help it do better. Within that time the agency has changed as quickly as local government itself, and it must continue to change to remain relevant." 

Local Government Association - "As the national voice for local communities, the LGA speaks for nearly 500 local authorities representing over 50 million people and spending £65 billion a year on local services. The LGA has been established to promote the case for democratic local communities which are prosperous, safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable, and which provide equality of opportunity for all citizens." 

Info4local.gov.uk - This site provides a one-stop gateway for quick and easy access to local government-related information that is published on the web sites of central government departments and agencies. 

Local Government Information Unit - The Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) is an independent body set up to examine the local government White Paper and identify the action needed for local government to thrive.
