Bedford Town Centre Transport Study
Building on the work undertaken previously by other consultants for the Bedford Town Centre development framework, the report outlines a strategy and funding required for the medium and longer term to support a second round of regeneration and to provide an enhanced context and a robust justification for the scheme bid made to the Department of Transport.
This report has been prepared, by Faber Maunsell, as part of a commission for Bedfordshire County Council, Bedford Borough Council and Renaissance Bedford to develop the existing policy framework for transport in and around Bedford town centre. Building on the work undertaken previously by other consultants for the Bedford Town Centre Development Framework (2005), the intention is to flesh out the recognition in Local Transport Plan 2 (2006 to 2011) so that a strategy and funds are required for the medium and longer term to support a second round of regeneration, and to provide an enhanced context and a robust justification for the scheme bid made to the Department of Transport.
The next 15 years are seen as an opportunity for Bedford to further its growth and realise its full potential as a shopping, leisure and cultural centre. It is envisaged that by 2021 Bedford town centre will look a very different place, having seen some major redevelopment. However, in order to sustain this growth it is envisaged that some further improvements to the transport provision within the town centre will need to be made, as well as links to and from the town centre.
