Local Plan

A key component in the planning framework for the Borough is looking ahead to the demands placed on the area and balancing these with the needs of the local community and the protection of its environment. By monitoring current and future changes throughout the Borough and by proposing clear and precise planning policies the Council endeavours to direct future development into the most appropriate locations. The Policy Team undertakes this work as part of its responsibilities and was responsible for preparing the current Local Plan for the Borough.

Preparation of the Local Plan

The Bedford Borough Local Plan 2002 was published as a draft for consultation in 1995. The draft was subsequently amended and ‘placed on deposit’ for formal public comment in February 1997. A public local inquiry was held during 1999 to consider the representations that had been made and the Inspectors Report of the inquiry was published in May 2001. The Council published Proposed Modifications to the draft Local Plan in September 2001 and it was finally adopted by the Council in October 2002. The Plan covers the period to 2006.

What local plan policies are ‘saved’ and still apply?

The Local Plan is to be replaced by the Bedford Local Development Framework. Many policies in the Local Plan are ‘saved’ until replaced by policies in the Local Development Framework. The majority of policies were ‘saved’ by a Direction from the Secretary of State on 14^th September 2007. Some of those ‘saved’ policies have now been deleted following the adoption of the Core Strategy and Rural Issues Plan on 16^th April 2008.
