BEDFORD BOROUGH COUNCILS YOUTH PARTICIPATION WORK

WELCOME TO BEDFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL'S YOUTH PARTICIPATION PAGE

Did you know that Bedford Borough Council works with a number of local young people to ensure that young people are listened to when decisions are made?

Did you know that we run a number of youth led projects and events ranging from large scale ones (like the Bedford SNAP dance) to smaller ones (like helping young people set up youth forums or action groups)?

Did you know that our pro-active approach to our work with young people was recognised in a recent charter mark assesment noting that the team had a "major part to play" and is "positivly involved in the local community"?

Youth

Bedford Borough Council's Youth Participation Work includes

  • Working with young people directly in youth led action projects, actively encouraging youth involvment and community change;
  • Working to involve young people in the work of the council, to take part in consultations, guide the work we do as a council and to involve young people in innovative and accessible ways;
  • Providing information to young people about our projects, the work of the council and other youth services, through websites, newsletters and other promotion work.

We also offer a wide range of support to Parish and Town Councils and other youth organisations across the Borough

Young People

Youth Participation can be defined as the active involvment of young people in decisions that affect them. This includes decisions in a youth club, a school, local community project, through to decisions which are made on thier behalf by large bodies such as the local and national government.

Group Session

The level at which young people are enabled to become involved varies, with some involving young people in a tokenistic way, while others have adopted a youth led approach to thier service provision, ensuring that young people are the main deciders in any situation.

Youth Involvement

The level at which young people participate should always be down to the personal choice, with all levels being recognised and acknowledged positively.

Computer

We work to this theory - young people are encouraged to get involved at Bedford Borough Council in areas which they feel comfortable, they are then supported and trained in order to be able to take part in new opportunities.
