2007 Winners

On Thursday 21st June 2007 Pride in Bedford hosted over 170 guests in the Harpur Suite at the second Pride in Bedford Mayor’s Community Awards.

This year the judges had 28 entries to choose from with nominations from Parish Councillors, Street Rangers, staff and members of the public.

The awards are split into three award categories; certificate of recognition, community winner and overall Borough winner.

Below is a list of award winners;

David Cooper

David Cooper photographDavid has been a resident of Bromham nearly all of his life, and despite his busy professional life he is very active member of the local residents association and regularly organises the community clean ups. David recently organised the planting of Bromham’s first community orchard within the parklands estate. David is a great example of a person who is ‘giving back’ to the community in which he lives.

Bromham Show Committee photographThe Bromham show in now one of the few local villages shows which continues to flourish and whilst retaining many traditions has adapted to 21st century to ensure that it also offers something for today’s younger members of society to ensure it has a sustainable future.

The Bromham show committee is active throughout the year fundraising in the Spring and Autumn which helps to finance the summer show weekend which now covers three events.

The show only succeeds because of the tireless commitment of the organising committee who year in year out ensure that the show is properly planned and managed and developed with everyone taking on a role.


Street Ranger Young Person Award:

Daniel Bateson & Adam Davis

Harrold boys photographDaniel and Adam are a wonderful couple of boys who have together with their peers approached the parish council and asked if they could work together to form a youth group aiming to improve the youth activities in the village of Harrold. The young people asked to set up a mountain bike track and kick wall in Harrold Odell Country Park, working with the parish council and the park wardens they helped to achieve their goals.

Andrew Gell photographOn behalf of Riseley the Parish Council nominated Andrew Gell in recognition for his tireless and selfless contributions of time, effort and so more over many years. Always giving up his time on a voluntary basis Andrew has been a long serving member of numerous village groups, almost all such involvement being at a level of committee member often as chairman or treasurer and always doing more than his fair share of organisation, presentation and plain hard graft.

Bryden Keenan photographBryden Keenan has made a huge contribution to help refugees and asylum seekers in Bedford and beyond through tireless voluntary commitment to BRASS – Bedfordshire Refugee & Asylum Seeker Support.





Pat Olney Leisure and Culture Award:

William Knight

William Knight photographAfter retiring Bill Knight obtained a BA & MA in history and started volunteering at Bedford Museum in June 1988, over 19 years he has volunteered on a weekly basis at the museum.

Working in the archaeology and social history departments he has written thousands of documentation cards covering a diversity of items.

Apart from service in WW2 Bill has lived in and worked in North Bedfordshire all his life. As a corn dealer he visited local farms and has occurred an amazing amount of local knowledge which has helped identify & interpret items.
