18 Years Old and Right to Vote
Make yourself heard – vote at the next election or stand as a candidate!
What issues matter to you?
What do you think could be better?
What do you think is getting worse?
What can you do to change things?
I am pleased to tell you that as soon as you reach your 18th birthday you will finally be able to have your say on all the issues that matter to you. Whether they are local issues or national issues, elections offer citizens the right to make their voice heard. Do you feel safe in your neighbourhood? Does concern about debt put you off studying in higher education? Do the rising house prices worry you? Do you agree with Britain’s foreign policy? All the issues and debates that rage in the world today are now yours to dispute and question.
Not only will you have the right to vote, but as of January next year you will also be able to stand as a candidate. If you are 18 at the time the election is announced you will have the opportunity to represent the people around you. Young people need to be represented in politics. You have issues and opinions that matter and should be heard. After all, it will be you who inherits this country, so you should have your say, and there is no better way to do this than to become a political representative.
Before each election the Council will send you a polling card setting out the election to be held, when to vote, where to vote and the times in which to cast your vote. Alternatively, you can request a postal vote, or nominate someone to vote on your behalf. Voting only takes a few minutes yet will affect you for years to come. Throughout history there have been generations who have fought for the right to vote. Without it we cannot effect change, and almost certainly never see progress. You will be next leaders of this country – it is now time to start making these all-important decisions.
