Economic Development

To improve the economic well being of Bedford’s existing and future residents, by achieving higher levels of growth in the local economy than would otherwise occur – enhancing the prosperity of the Borough.  

The Council’s key priory areas:  
The activities of the Economic Development Unit support the key council priorities and, in particular, the commitments to a prosperous and enjoyable borough. The service has seven key objectives that provide the framework for effective economic development action.  

Seven key objectives  

1.    BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
To encourage inward investment, the retention and development of local companies and the establishment of new start-up enterprises.  

2.    TOWN CENTRE RENAISSANCE
To create a highly attractive, safe and successful Town Centre Providing an excellent range of activities and facilities which can be used and enjoyed by all.  

3.    MARKETING & PROMOTION
To market Bedford, as a prime investment location, raising the profile and image of the town and promoting its investment opportunities.    

4.    TOURISM DEVELOPMENT
To support and work in partnership with the local tourism industry in order to expand what it has to offer and to effectively market Bedford, as a tourist destination.  

5.    LOCAL ECONOMIC REGENERATION
To tackle disadvantage and to work with partners to ensure that all members of the community can participate successfully in local economy.  

6.    INFRASTRUCTURE & ENVIRONMENT
To seek improvements in the general business environment (the supply and quality of infrastructure, premises, services etc) in order to foster enterprise, encourage investment and sustain economic growth.  

7.    PARTNERSHIPS
To work with regional, sub-regional and local partners to promote and provide for the economic interests of the Borough. In particular, develop partnership arrangements with English Partnerships and EEDA to assist specific regeneration goals.
